QUINCY & LIONEL: “WE ARE THE WORLD” SONG FOR HAITI

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Twenty-five years after “We Are the World” became a global hit, a remake of the charity song will benefit Haiti. Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie, who were both involved in the original, are planning a huge re-recording of the single to celebrate the milestone anniversary, according to the Hollywood Reporter blog, Showbiz 411. The legendary musicians are pushing artists who will be in Los Angeles for Grammy weekend to stay in the city till Monday, Feb. 1 for a massive sing-along at the Nokia Theater. The invite list so far includes Usher, Natalie Cole, and John Legend, according to Showbiz 411. But the blog predicts other acts – like Wyclef Jean, Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys, and Justin Timberlake - will quickly hop on board as Grammy nominees, presenters and guests get word. The anniversary was originally set to be marked on Jan. 28, but that changed when an earthquake devastated Haiti on Jan. 12. Now, proceeds from the single and video will go to Haiti relief. ”We Are the World,” written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian, was released in 1985 to benefit African famine relief. It featured vocals from powerhouses like Jackson, Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles.

JANET JACKSON HAS NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Janet Jackson, one of the most prolific and successful singers of our time, while also among the most private of stars, is gearing up for a comeback in 2010. Many things have changed since fans last heard of her in the media, things she has kept well under wraps so far. 2009 was a very tough year for the singer. Among the many things she had to deal with, one can list just off the top of one’s head, the loss of her brother Michael and coming out of a 7-year relationship with Jermaine Dupri. However, she’s keeping her hopes high for this new year, as Janet chose to deal with all this the best way she knows how, namely burying herself in work and getting involved in several major projects.

“When you hear people say life goes on, it’s really the truth. You can’t stop living. It becomes a part of you. I feel a bit selfish because there are times I feel I shouldn’t be doing this, but I enjoy my work and I have to keep doing it. I have to keep my life going. There are days that are harder than others,” Janet says of what she’s learned from the experience of Michael’s death. At the same time, she also learned that she must never stop and take advantage of life before it’s too late.  Her New Year’s resolutions include learning a foreign language and getting closer to God. Janet Jackson has also written a book that should be coming out soon, and which, she hopes, will help people like her deal with some of their issues. “I hope it’s inspiring for all ages. I’m talking about weight loss, confidence, self-esteem – especially in your youth. It’s not an autobiography, but there are little anecdotes that I give here and there from my childhood all the way to the present that I thought would be interesting and helpful to share,” the star says of the book. The album, which will presumably be released by Interscope in June, will bring back the Janet fans came to know back in the day: upbeat and energetic.

GEORGE CLOONEY TELETHON FOR HAITI

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

“We’re doing a telethon on all the channels, every network in the country and international as well,” Clooney said. “It’s an unbelievable show. Bono’s written a song for it and songs are going to available on iTunes that night.  “People in Haiti have absolutely nothing. There are times when, as bad as it is for many people in this country, people also realize how much worse it is for them and they are very compassionate.”  The telethon will pair musical performances with news reports from CNN, with Clooney hosting from Los Angeles, Wyclef Jean from New York and CNN’s Cooper from Haiti.

Sting will be joined in New York by Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Shakira. Timberlake and Aguilera will take the stage in Los Angeles, along with Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. In London, the lineup includes Rihanna, Bono, Coldplay, Jay-Z and The Edge.

The global telethon will air on MTV channels worldwide, as well as on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, HBO and CNN on January 22. Donations will be divided evenly between Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef’s Yele Haiti Foundation.
