The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has named Beyoncé as the official face of their limited-edition “Fashion For Haiti” T-shirt. The charitable tee features black and lime green graphics designed by Peter Arnell, who also created the CFDA’s iconic “Fashion for America” mended heart T-shirt that raised $2 million dollars following 9/11 for the Twin Towers Fund. As the spokesperson for “Fashion For Haiti,” Beyoncé has a message for all fashionistas: “Join me and the fashion industry by buying and wearing the Fashion for Haiti T-shirt. Together we can send a message of hope by raising much needed funds for the people of Haiti.” In addition to Beyoncé, fashion designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Tommy Hilfiger and more are rallying to promote the $25 knit. The CFDA will donate the net proceeds from each T-shirt to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Look for the tee to hit shops and e-boutiques on February 16. Distributed by Twentieth-Century Fox, “Avatar” hit the vaunted $1 billion mark in combined domestic and overseas revenue in just 17 days, a pace believed to be unprecedented, even for “Titanic.” The story of humans invading a distant planet to mine a plentiful supply of a rare mineral, “Avatar” has tongues wagging over its ground-breaking special effects. What’s even more jaw-dropping for box-office watchers is the “legs,” or staying power that the film has maintained. “Avatar” didn’t set any records during its first weekend in theaters after debuting Dec. 18.

SOUTH AFRICANS NOT HAPPY WITH JENNIFER HUDSON AS WINNIE

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Hailed as the “mother of the nation” by some, reviled as a corrupt and violent adulteress by others, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is one of South Africa’s most prominent figures. News that a film is to be made of her life, with Jennifer Hudson, the American actress, playing the leading role has not gone down well in the country’s acting community.  At a stormy weekend press conference, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa said that using foreign actors to tell the country’s stories undermined efforts to develop a national film industry. “It can’t happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood, and yet we keep bringing in imports,” said Mabutho Sithole, the union’s president.  “This decision must be reversed. It must be stopped now,” Oupa Lebogo, the union’s secretary-general, told The Times. Udo Froese, a close friend of Madikizela-Mandela, agreed: “There’s a lot of good local talent, why not use them? Winnie herself is not involved in this, and in no way has given any sort of green light. ”The film is based on Winnie Mandela: A Life, an unofficial biography by Anna Marie du Preez, a local journalist. Hudson, a former winner of American Idol, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2007 for Dreamgirls, landed the role last month. The film will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, a South African film-maker, whose other works include Cry, The Beloved Country and Sarafina.
