‘PRECIOUS” is a very stereotypical film that depicts dark skin as ugly and something to be ashamed of. The physical appearance of “Precious” was very much parellel to the image of “Butterfly McQueen, Hattie McDaniel or any other “Mammy” caricature. It stereotyped black men as child molesterd, rapist & absent from the lives of their families. Black women were portrayed as welfare recipients, lazy, docile, foul mouthed, brutish, violent, ignorant creatures that speak bastardized english and have little to no desire to take care of their responsiblities including children. The movie is honest at unveiling the pressure that we as Asiatic women have with being comfortable in our own skin in such a “romanized” society. Unfortunately, the film is a reflection of some of harsh realities that exist. Monique should of been more selective about the roles before accepting offers. “Precious like “Soul Plane” are aweful!

We as black men and women have fought hard to escape stereotypes in television and film in terms of the roles that are reprentative of us. The stereotype for black men and women over the last 40 years is that we are on welfare, we are stupid, we have babies by multiple men and don’t know who the daddy is, and just are shiftless and ignorant.

We rose to the films that defined an intelligent image of us such as the DOROTHY DANDRIDGE STORY starring Halley Berry and MALCOLM X starring Denzel Washington.

Now we can all celebrate that PRECIOUS is here! A movie that shares the story of an African American Sister who is uneducated, on welfare, with babies by different men, who allows her man to be with her daughter cause she doesn’t want to lose her man.

MY GOD!!! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR PEOPLE!! WE HAVE LOST OUR INTEGRITY< OUR DIGNITY !!!

If Steven Spielberg had produced this, would he be celebrated?

What will the other races think of us now? WE CAN’T SAY A WORD ABOUT
FIGHTING STEREOTYPES WITH OTHER RACES AND REPRESENTATION ANYMORE.

WE ARE NOW DOING IT TO OURSELVES!!!!!!THE ONLY RACE ON THE PLANET TO DO THIS TO THEMSELVES IS US!!

There are more whites on welfare than blacks as wrong as that sounds it true. White people hide that stuff and there kids don’t even know they are on it. There is good and bad in every race white people are smart enough to hide it so they don’t look bad. White and other races have been through that shit too.

The comments above reflect the limited views of the participants. Was the” Bill Cosby Show” any more a misrepresentation of black life in America in the 1980s than “Precious” ? Interestingly they both take place at the same time, which shows the diversity of African American Culture. The fact is, they both offer accurate portraits of lives lived at opposite ends of the economic spectrum. When will we black folks stop caring about what white people think and just live our own lives ???
